Your four most difficult eating challenges

Do you recognize any of these symptoms? And how long have you been trying to solve them?

1

CHALLENGE: Eating when you're not hungry and/or eating past fullness

Possible symptoms...

  • You have cravings but can't tell whether you're actually hungry.
  • You eat because it's mealtime, on a schedule, or when others are eating.
  • You are “food suggestible" and eat whenever food's around.
  • You don't feed yourself consistently, so you become overly hungry then overeat.
  • You think about food and eating constantly.
  • You sometimes confuse “head hunger" with physical hunger.
  • You eat for many other reasons when you're not hungry—boredom, stress, thirst, tired, emotions...
  • You have trouble knowing when (or how) to stop eating.
  • You are a star member of the Clean Plate Club.
  • You tend to graze all day (and/or all evening).
  • You have high-risk times for eating (especially afternoons and evenings).
  • You don’t know what else to do besides eat (or you know, but don’t do it!).
  • You forget to pause before, during, and/or after eating.
  • You sometimes don’t feel satisfied after eating.
  • You eat mindlessly or too fast to register when you're full.
  • You’ve tried dieting to manage your eating but it never lasts.

2

CHALLENGE: Eating what you love
in a balanced, non-restrictive way

Possible symptoms...

  • You crave sugar and other foods you think of as “bad.”
  • You’re afraid of losing control when you eat certain foods (especially foods you feel you shouldn’t eat).
  • You feel guilty when you eat forbidden foods.
  • You feel “addicted” to sweets or carbs.
  • You’re trying to eat “more healthy” or want to make changes to old habits (such as increasing your vegetables, decreasing soda) but have trouble being consistent.
  • You attempt to limit certain foods.
  • You are confused about nutrition because it has become so complicated.
  • You tend to label foods as “good” or “bad” (and feel bad when you eat what you “shouldn’t).
  • You have trouble when eating out including portion sizes, making balanced choices, and distraction.
  • You’re having difficulty with meal planning and prep because you are busy, tired, or feeling unmotivated.
  • You have a medical condition (or symptoms) that you are trying to manage by changing your eating and having difficulty with consistency.
  • You have difficulty with family members, navigating their eating habits and preferences.
  • You have trouble balancing your eating (listening to what your body needs vs. what you want).
  • You don’t want to choose “healthy” foods when other options are available.
  • You have trouble breaking free of diet culture.

3

CHALLENGE: Coping with triggers
and emotional eating

Possible symptoms...

  • Your life seems to revolve around food.
  • You eat when you’re under stress.
  • You eat because you’re bored.
  • You eat to avoid or put off doing something (procrastin-eating).
  • You eat for a reward.
  • You eat for distraction and comfort.
  • You eat to calm anxiety.
  • You struggle with communication and boundaries in your relationships (and eat instead).
  • You tend to be perfectionistic and/or think in terms of "all or nothing."
  • You don’t know why you eat.
  • You can eat until you are stuffed, but you still feel unsatisfied.
  • You are aware you use food for emotional regulation but aren’t sure what else to do.
  • You find it difficult to pause before reaching for food.
  • You eat secretly (or differently in private than you do in public).
  • You don’t have other ways to calm your emotions or shift your mood.
  • You feel ashamed after emotional eating—and that causes you to eat more.

4

CHALLENGE: Spending too much energy on food & weight, not on living

Possible symptoms...

  • You’ve been postponing your life until your eating or body changes.
  • You are dealing with weight and body image struggles.
  • You are having trouble with life balance.
  • You have difficulty with making (or taking) time for self-care.
  • You have difficulty making your needs a priority, especially as a caregiver.
  • You have health concerns that are affected by eating and physical activity.
  • You have fatigue, sleeping issues, and exhaustion.
  • You struggle adding physical activity to your life consistently.
  • You question your self-worth, making it difficult to take care of yourself.
  • You're frustrated by incongruence between what you know and what you do.
  • Your life has been so focused on diet and weight, you don’t even know what you love to do (besides eat).

Dr. Michelle May is a rare voice of wisdom, compassion, and common sense. She is funny, smart, and incredibly generous with her time and insights. When I first came to her, I was desperate -- I had tried every diet under the sun and even gastric bypass surgery. Not surprisingly, none of it worked to change my relationship with food. What I saw as the answer -- diets, restriction, self-hatred, unrealistic expectations -- were actually the problem. Thanks to Dr. May and the community she has created, I have begun to make friends with food and with my body. The result has been life-changing. I am incredibly grateful for her and for her work.

I have found working with Dr. May's group for a month more helpful than a year of nutritional counseling one-to-one. The support and wisdom of the group she leads has been invaluable. As we unravel our disordered eating together, I have learned from each person and gained a greater respect for myself.

What I have most appreciated about group coaching is the discovery that I am not alone in dealing with my problems with food. In other people I found a piece of myself. Their story was partly mine too. And in their sharing, I could understand patterns with food I had been carrying for a lifetime. Listening to other people has helped me to be more human, more loving and compassionate, able to accept their vulnerability and mine, to love that part that is struggling but which is trying hard to heal and make peace. All under the attentive, patient, loving and wise presence of Michelle who helps us find the most functional answers and strategies for each of us.
