About Michelle May, M.D.

Michelle May

Welcome! I am a Michelle May, a physician and recovered yo-yo dieter.

Michelle May with chocolate 1I began dieting around age 11 and yo-yo dieted all the way through high school, college, medical school, and into my medical practice. For a long time, I believed that I simply didn’t have enough willpower (or rather, won’t power) or just hadn’t found the right diet. Most of my patients (and the rest of the country) didn’t seem to be doing any better.

Then it dawned on me. There was nothing wrong with me–and everything wrong with dieting. Diets create a negative, obsessive connection to food and exercise, usually leading to deprivation, guilt, and rebound overeating. I call that the eat-repent-repeat cycle.

For over ten years I’ve been eating instinctively, using my natural hunger and fullness cues to guide me, instead of rigid, arbitrary, and restrictive rules. I created the Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating and Weight Management Program to share the freedom and joy that come with learning how to eat what you love and love what you eat.

My new book, Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat: A Mindful Eating Program to Break Your Eat-Repent-Repeat Cycle is based on these workshops and will show you how to eat instinctively, step-by-step. Before you know it, you will experience that same joy and freedom. You can download and read the first chapter right now!

Eat What You Love shows you how to resolve mindless and emotional eating and break free of yo-yo dieting. I truly want you to experience the pleasure of eating the foods you love-without guilt or bingeing-by learning strategies for eating fearlessly and mindfully. I hope that your new, powerful patterns of thinking will guide you to live the balanced, healthy, vibrant life you desire.

Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat: A Mindful Eating Program to Break Your Eat-Repent-Repeat Cycle is now available everywhere! Look for it at Barnes & Noble, Borders, your favorite independent bookstore, Amazon, and of course, my website, www.AmIHungry.com.
